Internet Protocol TV is quite simply a method of delivering a multitude of different traditional TV broadcast formats such as Freeview, Analogue, and Satellite over technologies that are standard in a computer network.
This first flavour describes distributing IPTV on a wide scale over a wide area network (WAN) for example your home broadband connection.
Distributing TV over wide area networks requires major infrastructure and bandwidth and has been in use commercially in the UK since 1999 on a small scale but is now being adopted by more published companies such as BT for delivering on demand services as well as a limited channel selection over your broadband link.
