When Manchester businesses ask us what vinyl we use for vehicle wraps, we always say the same thing: either Metamark or 3M, depending on the project. Both are premium cast vinyl materials. Both carry 5–7 year outdoor durability ratings. Both perform extremely well on Manchester roads through rain, temperature change, and road debris. But there are genuine differences worth knowing about.
What Is Cast Vinyl?
First, the important distinction: cast vinyl vs. calendered vinyl. Calendered vinyl is made by extruding material through rollers. It’s cheaper to produce, but has more internal stress — meaning it tends to shrink over time, especially on complex curves. Cast vinyl is made by pouring liquid material onto a casting sheet and curing slowly, resulting in a dimensionally stable material with less internal stress. For vehicle wraps, cast vinyl is the only appropriate choice — and both Metamark and 3M are cast vinyl brands.
Metamark
Metamark is a UK-manufactured vinyl brand — produced in Halifax, Yorkshire. It’s well-regarded across the UK sign and vehicle graphics trade for its consistent quality, competitive pricing, and strong availability. Metamark’s MD5 series is one of the most widely used vehicle graphics vinyls in the UK market and performs extremely well in the Manchester climate.
We use Metamark as our standard vehicle wrap vinyl. It offers excellent colour reproduction, good conformability on complex curves and recesses, and the 5–7 year durability rating covers normal UK outdoor conditions comfortably.
3M
3M is the American multinational with a global presence and a long track record in adhesive and vinyl technologies. 3M’s 1080 and 2080 wrap film series is the benchmark against which other vinyl products are measured. Excellent conformability, extensive colour and finish range (including satin, matte, colour-shift, carbon fibre, and brushed metal effects), and a 5–7 year durability rating.
3M is our preferred material when we’re working with complex finishes — matte black, satin chrome, colour-shift, or any effect that isn’t available in Metamark’s range. The cost premium over Metamark is typically 15–25% on a full wrap project.
Which Should You Choose?
For the majority of Manchester vehicle wraps — standard full-colour livery in gloss or satin finish — Metamark is the right call. It delivers the quality you need at the best value. For specialist finishes, colour-shift effects, or projects where the 3M brand name carries value to the end client, we use 3M.
In every case, we’ll advise on what’s appropriate for your specific project. The material decision is part of our expertise — you don’t need to know the answer before you call.
