How to Look After Your Van Wrap — A Care Guide for North West Vehicle Owners
A quality van wrap is an investment — and like any investment, looking after it properly will maximise your return. At Signs Company Manchester, we use premium Metamark and 3M cast vinyl on all our wraps, which are designed to last 5–7 years in normal conditions. But “normal conditions” assumes some basic care. Here’s everything you need to know to keep your wrap looking its best throughout its lifetime.
The First 7 Days — Critical Curing Period
After installation, your wrap needs time to cure fully. During the first seven days, we recommend avoiding automatic car washes entirely, hand-washing only if absolutely necessary (using cold water and a soft cloth), and parking in shade or a garage where possible to avoid prolonged direct sun exposure. The adhesive is still bonding to the vehicle surface during this period — aggressive washing can affect edge adhesion before it’s fully set.
Ongoing Washing — Do’s and Don’ts
Hand washing is always best. Use a mild, pH-neutral vehicle shampoo diluted in warm (not hot) water. Use a soft microfibre cloth or sponge. Work from the top down and rinse thoroughly with clean water to avoid soap residue, which dulls the vinyl over time.
Touchless automatic car washes are acceptable if you can’t hand-wash — the jets of water and soap won’t damage a well-applied wrap. However, avoid them for the first 30 days.
Never use brushed automatic car washes. The spinning brushes create micro-scratches in the vinyl surface and can lift edges, particularly around panel joins and cut edges. Even a single pass through a brush wash can visibly damage a gloss or metallic wrap.
Avoid high-pressure jet washing at close range. Keep pressure washer nozzles at least 300mm from the surface and never direct a jet at a 90-degree angle to the edges of the vinyl — this forces water under the vinyl and can cause lifting.
Dealing With Fuel Spills
Fuel and oil can stain and damage vinyl if left to sit. If you get a fuel spill during filling, rinse the affected area immediately with clean water and blot dry with a clean cloth. Don’t rub — this spreads the fuel and can force it into surface micro-pores. If staining occurs, isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a soft cloth can remove most petroleum-based stains without damaging the vinyl.
Bird Droppings, Tree Sap, and Industrial Fallout
These are your wrap’s worst enemies in Manchester’s North West climate. Bird droppings are acidic and will etch into vinyl if left in sunlight — remove as quickly as possible using a damp cloth to soften first, then wipe gently. Tree sap is best removed with isopropyl alcohol or a specialist vinyl-safe cleaner. Industrial fallout (orange/brown spots common in areas near rail lines) should be treated with a dedicated fallout remover spray — check with us if you’re unsure which product is safe for your wrap.
Polishing and Waxing Wrapped Vehicles
Do not use machine polishes or abrasive compounds on wrapped panels — these remove the protective laminate layer. A vinyl-safe spray wax or detailing spray can be used to add temporary gloss and protection, but check the product is specifically stated as safe for vinyl wraps. Most standard car waxes are fine on gloss wraps but can leave a white residue on matte or satin finishes.
Storage and Parking
Where possible, park under cover or in shade during very hot weather. Prolonged exposure to intense UV accelerates fading on any vinyl — though Metamark and 3M cast films are heavily UV-stabilised. Avoid parking on roads where salt gritting is heavy during winter — clean the vehicle more frequently during gritting season as salt build-up around panel edges can accelerate edge lifting over time.
When to Call Us
If you notice any edge lifting, bubbling, or discolouration, get in touch as early as possible. Minor edge lifting caught early can be repaired relatively easily — left unaddressed it can spread and lead to a more costly repair. We offer wrap repairs and maintenance services from our Manchester workshop.
