Van Wrap Materials Explained — Choosing the Right Vinyl for Your Vehicle
Not all van wrap vinyl is created equal. When you’re investing £1,200 to £2,000+ in a vehicle wrap, the quality of the vinyl film and laminate used for your wrap is one of the most important factors determining how long it lasts, how good it looks for how long, and how easily it comes off when you eventually remove it. At Signs Company Manchester, we use premium cast vinyl from Metamark and 3M on all our vehicle wraps — but we’re often asked why, and what the difference is. Here’s a straightforward guide.
Cast vs Calendered Vinyl — The Key Distinction
Vinyl film for vehicle wrapping comes in two fundamental types: cast and calendered (also called “calandered”). The names refer to the manufacturing process — and the difference has significant practical consequences for vehicle applications.
Cast vinyl is manufactured by pouring (casting) liquid PVC onto a release liner and allowing it to cure. The resulting film has virtually no internal stress — it conforms to compound curves, complex panel shapes, and recessed areas without lifting or tunnelling. Cast films are typically 50–100 microns thick, have a service life of 5–7+ years for vehicle wraps, and release cleanly from paintwork at end of life without leaving adhesive residue or pulling paint.
Calendered vinyl is manufactured by rolling heated PVC through heavy rollers to create a continuous sheet. The process introduces internal stresses into the film — it “wants” to return to its flat state. On flat surfaces, this doesn’t matter. On curved vehicle panels, it causes the vinyl to lift from recessed areas and panel edges over time. Calendered films are typically 80–120 microns thick (thicker but less flexible), have a realistic vehicle wrap lifespan of 2–3 years, and can be more difficult to remove cleanly.
Brand Comparison — Metamark vs 3M
We use Metamark MD5 and MD7 series as our primary wrap films, with 3M 1080 and 2080 series as alternatives for specific applications (particularly colour-change wraps). Both are premium cast films with excellent outdoor durability and a range of finishes. Metamark is a UK-manufactured product with excellent value-to-quality ratio for printed wrap applications. 3M’s 2080 series has an outstanding colour-change wrap range including matte, satin, and specialty finishes that’s unmatched in breadth. We select the most appropriate product for each specific application.
Laminate — Why It Matters
Every printed vehicle wrap at Signs Company Manchester is finished with a clear protective laminate — a separate layer of cast film applied over the printed vinyl. The laminate protects the print from UV fade (extending colour life by 2–3 years), provides scratch and abrasion resistance, and adds a consistent surface finish (gloss, satin, or matte). A wrap without laminate will fade significantly faster and shows scratches from washing and minor contact damage much more visibly.
